Good asset management involves the monitoring of key performance metrics, both for equipment and the core business, maintenance being considered an important part of the core business. They are used to assess the effectiveness of the various programs and the overall health of the equipment. During our interviews, we were not shown any pump Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) data, either for individual pumps or total pump populations. Most plants collect and trend this metric to ascertain the health of their pumps.
DISCUSSION OF MACHINERY AND MAINTENANCE KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Pump MTBFs vary considerably from plant to plant depending on pump population, service, and maintenance approach. When a large pump population is considered, some plants have an average population MTBF of upwards of 5 years for API specified pumps. Table C-1 is a guide to individual MTBF based on service conditions and is based on actual field experience. The new booster and injections pumps should achieve run-lengths in the order of several years once the seal flush water quality problem is resolved.
Table C-2 provides a listing of typical overhaul intervals for major machinery.
Maintenance KPIs are used to measure the effectiveness of the maintenance organization. During our interviews with Safaniya staff, the team was introduced to several KPIs that Saudi Aramco monitored. However, the number of maintenance KPIs was limited. Table C-3 provides example maintenance effectiveness KPIs with benchmark targets.
The Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals organization has developed definitions for many reliability and maintenance metrics from which these tables were developed.
